The Seychelles Media Commission will be submitting to the Vice President’s Office a revised copy of the Seychelles Media Commission - Code of Conduct for the Media in Seychelles.
This follows internal revision, alignment with international Codes and local consultation with media houses.
The Code is intended to govern the conduct of publishers of newspapers, radio and television broadcasters, news agencies, journalists, publishers, as well as online publications. The Code sets out guidelines and general principles for publishers, authors, journalists and distributors.
The Code was first reviewed by the SMC Board in December of 2018, six years following its publication. It was noted that some parts of the Code were outdated and did not meet the developments taking place in the sector.
Therefore the SMC Secretariat conducted a research of international codes between June to October 2019. The proposals were reviewed and approved by the Board by December of 2019.
In 2020, the Code was sent to the all media houses for consultation.
From January to March 2020, the Association of Media Practitioners in Seychelles were invited to review the code, as per Section 13 (2.c) of the SMC Act that requires that the Code to be formulated in consultation with the association. Between March and September 2019 the consultation was extended to local media houses.
The SMC Board discussion on the points submitted, took place between January and July 2022. The Code has been finalised and the SMC is recommending that the Code is published in the Gazette, henceforth it will become a Regulation.
