As the world is celebrating World Press Freedom Day, the Seychelles will this week be taking part in the Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS) one of the biggest collaborative research projects in the field of journalism. It is a representative survey of journalists in 120+ countries, involving 30,000+ interviews of journalists, and the first survey of a kind implemented in the Seychelles.

The survey is carried out here, in the Seychelles, by a WJS research investigator in collaboration with the Seychelles Media Commission and Education and Socio-Economic Research Institute at UniSey.

The basic idea behind WJS is to administer the same survey to journalists across the world and across time (WJS1 surveys were administered between 2007-2011; WJS2 was 2012-2016; and we will be collecting the data for WJS3, which is taking place between 2021-2023). This allows researchers to make country-by-country comparisons and to see how the state of journalism in each country has changed over time.

The survey is targeting all journalists in the country. Media houses are therefore being invited to engage journalists to participate in the survey any time during the period from Thursday 05th May to Friday, 20th May 2022. The questionnaire is anonymous, will take about 20 minutes to complete and may be administered either physically (pen to paper) or online. A representative of the research team will be available to oversee the process.
