The Seychelles Media Commission has been invited to partner with the Department of Culture in organising the first ever workshop on Diversity and Cultural Pluralism in the country. The workshop will be hosted by UNESCO and will coincide with “World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development” which will fall on the 21st of March. The event will also coincide with the Create|2030.
The purpose of the training is to raise awareness among media professionals on the importance of media diversity and diversity in the media. It aims to identify the gaps and demonstrate media’s role as a promoter of the diversity of cultural expressions, while equipping participants with the tools to advocate for the promotion of diverse cultural expressions through their work. Media practitioners are producers, distributors, diffusers and mediators of cultural expressions. The organisers will be working in close collaboration with the UNESCO team
Create|2030 Seychelles Talk will discuss policy initiatives and measures taken or needed to support Diversity of Media and Diversity of content in the Media in Seychelles. The talk will be preceded by a public presentation of the findings and recommendations of the UNESCO 2018 Global Report: Reshaping Cultural Policies.
In 2001, UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and in December 2002, the UN General Assembly, in its resolution 57/249, declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The day provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to advance the four goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions adopted on 20 October 2005:
- Support sustainable systems of governance for culture
- Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase mobility of artists and cultural professionals
- Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks
- Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms
